What inspired you to be vegan?

One of the most popular questions I get is, “Why are you vegan?” I love when people ask this question because I have an endless list of responses.

Growing up, my empathetic mother, who was vegetarian, taught me that there could be another way to live and eat intentionally. She never forced me to follow a vegetarian diet, just modeled what it could look like. That influence had me looking into the animal agriculture industry. After watching countless documentaries, researching statistics and learning that animal agriculture is the #3 cause for global warming, there was no way I could go back. By age 12 I decided I wanted to try being vegetarian. It stuck.

As I merged into my early 20s and moved into my own apartment, I realized I had full control over my everyday meals. I was doing my own grocery shopping and my awareness couldn’t shift away from the fact that I was still consuming animal products. I was flirting with the idea of being vegan for a while and one day in 2020 I boiled some egg noodles for dinner, one bite was enough to put me off the flavor for good. I realized finally that I was ready to make the final transition.

Veganism has helped me solidify the foundational cornerstone that my spiritual beliefs and connection to the natural world rest upon. I believe it is my moral and spiritual obligation to protect vulnerable souls that cannot speak for themselves.

I believe in equity and equality for all living beings, not just humans. The natural world is alive and vibrating with love and connection, just because these critters can’t use words doesn’t mean humanity has the right to use genocide to enslave them.

Being vegan means being anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-homophobic, anti-transphobic, anti-misogynistic, anti-patriarchal, and against all forms of oppression, exploitation, and discrimination.
